Beacon of Hope

Beacon of Hope is a boarding school in Soroti, Uganda. It opened up in 2006 under the Seattle based organization, Pilgrim Africa. The secondary school has a STEM based curriculum and over half of the students attend on full scholarship.

Connection to Project

The ultimate goal is to disseminate the solar electric cookers to every household where the current cooking method is the burning of biomass, which is essentially every household in Uganda. In order to start the dissemination process, we need a partner in Uganda to help build the cookers and educate the communities on their benefits.

With the help of Chris Musasizi, a teacher at Beacon of Hope, we want to use BoH as a vehicle for implementation in the communities of Uganda. Since the curriculum is STEM based, there could be an added class or club started to manufacture the solar cookers. Additionally, a cooking class could be created to demonstrated how the cookers are used and share local recipes.

By having the students manufacture the solar cookers, as well as be educated on their benefits, the people of Uganda may be more accepting of this new form of cooking. The solar cookers will be a part of the communities from the start of their manufacturement.

Also with having the students build the products themeselves, there will be many more people educated on how they work and how they fix them if something goes wrong.

The students will hopefully be able to take their knowledge of the solar cookers and spread the use of the cookers throughout their communities and eventually all of Uganda.
